BroadBand Light (BBL)™

Broadband light (BBL) is an innovative technology setting new standards in skincare treatment. BBL therapy is also known as pulsed light therapy or a photo facial. At Schaffer Plastic Surgery in Birmingham, Dr. Christopher Schaffer uses this cutting-edge technology to produce firmer, younger-looking skin with more even tone and texture.

How Does BBL Work?

BBL delivers light energy to heal the upper layers of the skin. The targeted areas absorb heat, which stimulates the skin cells to produce new collagen. This process makes the skin smoother and more vibrant, evens tone and restores a more youthful, supple skin quality and appearance. Photothermal energy in BBL treatment eliminates fine blood vessels that cause redness and reduces pigmentation-causing melanin to treat sun damage and age spots.

What to Expect with BBL Treatment

BBL is a safe, FDA-approved treatment. The machine used to deliver broadband light is equipped with advanced cooling features. This allows for the delivery of high-powered energy with minimal discomfort. Although most patients do not need it, numbing cream can be applied to make the treatment more comfortable.

A cold gel is applied to the targeted areas before treatment, and you will be given protective eyewear. During the procedure, the smooth, glass surface of the handpiece is gently applied to the skin, delivering light in precise pulses to the skin surface of the treatment areas. Depending on the areas treated, the procedure may take a few minutes or up to a half an hour or more.

You can expect to see mild redness that feels like a slight sunburn immediately after the procedure. This should resolve within a few hours, but may last a day or two for some patients.

After BBL treatment, the skin will be sensitive to ultraviolet light until it has fully healed. It is important to avoid direct exposure to the sun, as well as tanning beds, for one month before and after each treatment session. Use a broad spectrum sunblock made with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide daily.

What Conditions Can Be Treated with BBL?

Any area of the body can be treated with BBL. It is most commonly used on areas exposed to the sunlight, such as the face, neck, shoulders, chest and the backs of the hands. This breakthrough therapy is frequently used to treat:

  • Age spots and sun spots
  • Fine wrinkles
  • Small facial veins
  • Acne
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Skin firmness and elasticity
  • Uneven skin tone
