Introducing the Mini Tummy Tuck

An abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is one of the most transformative procedures patients choose to undergo at Schaffer Plastic Surgery. Patients interested in a less invasive pathway to a smoother, flatter abdominal area may be interested to learn more about a mini tummy tuck. Whether you find yourself with excess abdominal skin after experiencing weight loss or childbirth, a mini tummy tuck could help you achieve the physique you desire.

What is a Mini Tummy Tuck?

Before delving into the specifics of a mini tummy tuck, it is important to understand the premise of a classic, or full, tummy tuck. A classic tummy tuck requires an incision running hip to hip and a second incision around the navel which allows Dr. Schaffer to work in both the upper and lower abdominal areas. This procedure can address skin laxity, stretched abdominal muscles and excess fat. Recovering from a classic tummy tuck typically requires at least two weeks off from work to allow for ample rest and recovery.

A mini tummy tuck, on the other hand, involves only a single incision just above the pubic area that is about six to twelve inches shorter than the incision required for a classic tummy tuck. Only the lower abdomen is addressed in this procedure and separated abdominal muscles from pregnancy cannot be pulled back together. Rather, ideal candidates for a mini tummy tuck are typically lean and have only a small flap of excess skin in the middle of the lower abdomen, such as above a cesarean section scar.

Results of a Mini Tummy Tuck

Patients who have a mini tummy tuck can expect to enjoy a smooth, flat lower abdominal wall with only a small tummy tuck scar—usually just a few inches long. It offers a faster, easier recovery than other types of tummy tucks. The navel is not touched or moved during a mini tummy tuck. Getting rid of excess lower abdominal skin through a mini tummy tuck can be a life-changing procedure for many patients and can open up new wardrobe possibilities.

Mini tummy tucks are not for everyone. To be an ideal candidate for a mini tummy tuck, you should be lean and have only a small flap of excess skin in the middle of the lower abdomen. Additionally, ideal candidates will be finished having children. Even though the improvements made by a tummy tuck can last a lifetime, future pregnancies or weight gain can diminish the results. If you are close to your ideal weight but still experiencing skin laxity beneath your belly button, you could be an excellent candidate for a mini tummy tuck.

Combining a Mini Tummy Tuck with Other Procedures

Patients who undergo a tummy tuck may choose to take advantage of other body contouring procedures after recovery. At Schaffer Plastic Surgery, we offer CoolSculpting® and SculpSure® for non-invasive fat removal. These procedures are ideal for refining areas of stubborn fat that are resistant to exercising and healthy eating and can be done on your lunch break. For faster results, power assisted liposuction may be an appealing fat removal procedure.
