Dermaplaning at Schaffer Plastic Surgery

We all want to put our best face forward. When dead skin cells leave skin feeling dull and drab, it can make us feel like we’re doing the exact opposite. For individuals seeking a way to refresh their skin’s appearance and return its youthful glow, dermaplaning is a helpful, painless treatment that provides noticeable results with no downtime.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is an exfoliation that removes the outermost layers of skin cells through the use of a specialized blade. This treatment can be followed by an infusion of active cosmeceuticals leaving skin refreshed and with a luminous glow. At Schaffer Plastic Surgery, our board-certified medical aesthetician, Chelsea, expertly wields the specialized exfoliating blade to remove dead skin cells and hair from your face. Following dermaplaning, your skin is more receptive to other treatments and will be able to deeply absorb products and benefit from these treatments.

What to Expect from Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a quick procedure with little to no downtime—in fact, it is sometimes referred to as the “lunchtime treatment” because it can be completed in 20 to 30 minutes and it is possible to squeeze the treatment in during a lunch break. Little to no preparation is required before the treatment but it is important to protect the skin against sun damage or sunburn in the days leading up to the treatment as these issues could make the treatment more painful or less effective.

During the procedure, you will lie down in a reclining chair and our board-certified medical aesthetician will gently scrape the dermaplaning blade over your skin’s surface at a 45-degree angle. This works to remove dead skin cells and other debris on the skin’s surface, revealing smooth, glowing skin underneath. A tingling sensation is common during the treatment, but you should not feel any pain.

What to Expect After Dermaplaning

After the exfoliation is complete, chemical peels and cosmeceuticals can be applied to enhance the treatment’s results. A soothing substance, such as a moisturizer and sunscreen will also be applied to protect the skin. Your skin will feel extremely smooth and supple following treatment, and since there will be no vellus hair on your face, your makeup will look better than ever.

Dermaplaning is a low-risk procedure and common side effects only include slight redness immediately following treatment. Some patients with more sensitive skin types report mild discomfort or redness for two to three days following treatment. During this time, it is particularly important to protect the skin from sun exposure by using sunscreen and avoiding direct sunlight.

Most patients will notice that their skin looks brighter and feels smoother immediately following treatment. The full effect of dermaplaning will become apparent after a few days or as redness subsides. Dermaplaning is not a permanent solution, but it is extremely effective in removing about three weeks’ worth of dead skin cells and environmental contaminants. To maintain glowing, smooth skin it is recommended to have a monthly dermaplaning appointment.

Am I a Good Candidate for Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a versatile and effective procedure for most skin types and most patients are good candidates for this treatment. Dermaplaning is especially effective for patients with a lot of redness in their skin tone as dermaplaning treats the surface of the skin without breaking or disturbing delicate capillaries like other treatments such as microdermabrasion can.

When considering dermaplaning, it is important to talk to a board-certified medical aesthetician about your goals and expectations, as well as your lifestyle and habits, in order to determine the best combination of procedures to help your skin look and feel its best. It is also important to only choose an experienced board-certified medical aesthetician to conduct dermaplaning procedures to best ensure your safety.
