What is a breast augmentation procedure?
A breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure that is performed to enhance the breasts with implants or through fat transfer. Breast implants come in many sizes, shapes, and textures, as well as a variety of materials, including saline, silicone, and cohesive gel silicone. These implants are placed above or below the pectoral muscles and help augment the size and shape of the natural breasts. When using fat transfer for a breast augmentation, fat is harvested from another part of the patient’s body where it is found in excess and re-injected into the designated treatment area to enhance the treated area.
How long does it take for the implants to soften and settle?
The amount of time it takes for the breast implants to settle can vary from patient to patient. Many patients see the majority of the swelling associated with the procedure resolve within six to eight weeks of a breast augmentation procedure, which allows the implants to settle into position. For some patients with tighter skin and/or smaller breasts, it may take three to six months for the breast tissue to relax to allow the implants to settle into good position.
What is the recovery period like?
We recommend that patients plan to take at least three to five days off of work following a breast augmentation procedure. Some patients may require a longer amount of time away from work depending on the nature of their job. You should not lift anything more than ten pounds for the first three weeks after your breast augmentation procedure and should not participate in any strenuous exercise for at least three to four weeks following the procedure.
