How CoolSculpting® Works
CoolSculpting® uses a scientific process called cryolipolysis, also known as “fat freezing,” which permanently kills fat cells. During a CoolSculpting® treatment session, an applicator adheres to an area of your body where excess fat exists to initiate the cryolipolysis process.
Once fat cells reach the point of freezing, the cells breakdown and are naturally eliminated by the body through the lymphatic system in one to three months or more.
The only way to achieve a permanent loss of fat cells is to either remove them through liposuction or cause their involution through cryolipolysis. Since it is impossible to grow new fat cells (they simply increase or decrease in size), the fat cells removed through CoolSculpting® will never come back, meaning results are truly permanent.
Choosing Schaffer Plastic Surgery for CoolSculpting®
For your safety, it is extremely important that you choose an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Christopher Schaffer for CoolSculpting® treatments. As a plastic surgeon, Dr. Schaffer has a deep understanding of the complexities of the anatomical areas treatable with CoolSculpting®. This will ensure your most natural-looking results possible and reduce the likelihood of any adverse outcomes. Even though CoolSculpting® treatments are non-invasive, they should still be conducted only by a medical doctor.
What to Expect During CoolSculpting®
CoolSculpting® treatments do not require any anesthesia, cutting or tissue manipulation, so most patients can expect to be able to resume normal activities immediately. Your treatment will begin with an applicator being attached to the area where you are looking to reduce excess fat via the cryolipolysis process. As the process begins, you may feel slightly uncomfortable, but this sensation quickly fades as fat cells reach the point of freezing. Many of our patients are able to catch up on emails, watch TV or enjoy reading a book during their CoolSculpting® treatment, which typically takes around thirty minutes.
What to Expect After CoolSculpting®
CoolSculpting® treatments are FDA-cleared as safe for people who do not experience any pre-existing conditions that would preclude them from treatment eligibility. After your treatment, it is common to experience some temporary redness, swelling, tingling, bruising or skin sensitivity in the treated areas. Since these side effects are typically minimal, most patients are able to experience little to no downtime after treatments and can return to work, exercise and other normal activities immediately. Results will begin appearing in as soon as one to three months post-treatment with final results appearing in six months.
