What Conditions Can Blepharoplasty Correct?
Men and women choose to have blepharoplasty for both cosmetic and functional reasons. This surgery can be performed to correct:
- Loose sagging skin on the upper eyelids that creates folds and affects eyelid contours
- Vision obstructed by droopy upper eyelids
- Puffiness caused by fatty deposits in the eyelids
- Bags under the eyes
- Fine wrinkles and excess skin on the lower eyelids
- Lower lids that droop revealing white below the iris
How Is Blepharoplasty Performed?
Eyelid surgery is among the top 5 cosmetic surgical treatments in the U.S., with 209,000 procedures performed in 2016 alone. It is a routine, straightforward procedure, typically performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation.
The surgeon makes an incision along the crease of the eyelid, through which sagging skin and muscle are trimmed and excess fat is removed. The incisions are closed with tiny sutures or skin glue. This procedure can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids, or both.
Incision lines are placed so that surgical scars will be well concealed within the natural contours of the eyelid. In the upper eyelid, the incision is made within the natural crease. To correct the lower eyelid, the incision may be made just below the lower lash line or, alternatively, on the inside of the lower eyelid if no excess skin is being removed.
Benefits of Blepharoplasty in Birmingham
When sagging eyelids are obstructing vision, correcting the problem is clearly beneficial. Eyelid surgery also offers important cosmetic benefits. The eyes have a significant impact on the general appearance of the face. Droopy upper eyelids, puffiness around the eyes, bags under the eyes, crow’s feet, and fine line lines around the eyes make a person appear tired, older and less vital.
At Schaffer Plastic Surgery in Birmingham, Dr. Christopher Schaffer offers both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures. He performs blepharoplasty procedures to rejuvenate the eye area and restore a more alert and refreshed overall facial appearance.
With advances in technology and cutting edge techniques, eyelid surgery does not produce a “pulled tight” or “permanently surprised” appearance. Dr. Schaffer performs blepharoplasty on the upper and lower eyelids with beautiful, natural-looking results without the overdone look associated with eyelift surgery performed with a less skillful hand.
